Make your vote count

Brian Says,...

I don't normally do mass emails but I felt it appropriate.  I think too many people place their vote for something or someone because of a commercial or how many signs they see for it in their neighborhood.  Not often enough do people in general really study out the issues and vote based off what matters most to them.  To that end I am emailing you, my friends and family.  Below is the link to the Lieutenant Governor's website.  On that page you can enter in some basic information to find your polling place, this is a good thing to know.  However, when you get your polling location there will also be a link to a sample ballot.  This is where the site gets cool.  You can see everything that you're going to vote for.  Don't know about a certain candidate, amendment or proposal?  Click on it and you'll be linked to some great information.

For example, Salt Lake County has a couple proposals to issue millions of dollars in bonds to expand the zoo and the aviary.  While voting for this might give you warm fuzzies to think about the animals that are going to get nicer cages, you might look at the numbers and realize that is a lot of money to allocate in less than ideal economic conditions - conditions that caused the state legislature to call an emergency session to re-balance the budget.

Read up on the candidates.  While I'm not shy about being republican I also know the party isn't the end-all be-all.  But we do have a pretty well run state when we look at some others (Hey California, I'm talking to you!).  Find the candidate that best matches your beliefs and values and cast a well informed vote for them.

In every election, and this year is no exception, blatant lies are passed off as news stories.  Too often it is the lie that we remember, that's why people use this dirty tactic.  Even when names are cleared of any wrong doing, little is done by the media to repair the damage.  A recent example of this is w/ Rep Greg Hughes in Draper.  In case you haven't heard, because no one is really talking about it now, he was exonerated of all 30 claims of unethical conduct (though he was told his conduct was "unbecoming").  We'll have to see how the committee views Rep Riesen's actions.

I digress, my point is that we should all take some time to study the candidates and issues.  It will be time well spent.

If you need some help with what the right answer might be about a particular issue, you might find this link helpful:
